China: JD.com enters the European market
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Richard Liu has revealed that JD.com plans to challenge Amazon in Europe as early as 2019 and expand its business to the entire European continent within a few years. Firstly, JD.com is going to launch its e-commerce platform and delivery services in France, then proceed into the UK and Germany.
The plans will also include the creation of the first JD European R&D center in Cambridge in the first half of 2019, which will focus on artificial intelligence and big data.In the past two years, JD.com has invested at least 1 billion euros to build its own logistics network in France.
Amazon, JD's main competitor, has invested 15 billion euro in Europe in six years from 2010. JD.com has also planned to invest in other foreign projects. For example, they are going to enter the U.S. market in the second half of this year. According to Richard Liu, JD.com will obtain half of the profits from the overseas markets.
