Italian vegetable producer ships more produce by air

The flights to deliver high-quality fresh produce to the Middle East and Hong Kong have more than doubled - Apofruit invested in new markets and was proven right. Last year, there were 166 flights against the 86 of two years before.

Apofruit is promoting its premium Solarelli range and feedback is good also from the Middle East and China. Sales in countries like Dubai and Saudi Arabia increased considerably between 2015 and 2017. Shipments are carried out by sea or by air.

"The East is very interesting but it's difficult to conquer so it takes constant commitment. In Hong Kong, for example, competition is very high. We chose to sell high-quality productions to retailers," explains director Ilenio Bastoni.

Focusing on air transport was the right choice, given that figures are increasing. Of course high-quality produce is needed that stands out from the rest.

"We increased sales considerably in Dubai too - we exceeded 1000 tons, 37% of which were shipped by air. The Middle East continues to give us satisfaction as remuneration is great. We will continue to work to retain customers and distributors."

Green kiwis and grapes are the most popular in Dubai. The number of products has increased compared to 2017. Packed unwashed salad and Angeleno plums have been recently introduced. Peaches and nectarines have also performed well. Solarelli packed unwashed salads are sold by Apofruit but processed by Opo Veneto part of Mediterraneo Group.

Value went from 1.8 million in 2015 to the over 3 million of 2017. 80% of the produce was shipped by air, meaning 37% of the quantities were worth 80% of the total.

Another interesting market is Saudi Arabia. Things are just starting and the main products are apples, grapes, apricots and plums. In this case, 31% of the produce is shipped by air.

"Air transport has very short transit times. We can talk about field to supermarket transfers in just 24 hours. Not all markets face certain costs, but Hong Kong, Dubai and Saudi Arabia can. Those who require the highest quality can afford air transport costs."
