Morocco competes with Spain on EU watermelon market

The EU has almost doubled its watermelon imports over the last decade. Prices have also increased, from €0.387/kilo 10 years ago to €0/453/kg at the moment. Last season Spain sold 1,188,593 tons of watermelon in the EU, which represents 40% of the total watermelon volume imported by the EU. Spain is therefore the EU's number one watermelon supplier with a figure reaching €579.98 million, meaning the average price was €0.488/kilo.

Morocco is the EU's 4th supplier, but also their number one non-EU supplier (206,547 tons with a €124.97 million turnover). Morocco manages to sell their watermelons for 24% more than Spain (on average €0.605/kg on the EU market) and significantly higher than the overall average (€0453/kg).
