Similar trade treaty as Canada, Japan and South Korea?

Brexit negotiator open to talks with business sector

On Monday a select group of businesses, including the Dutch GroentenFruit Huis, were invited to discuss Brexit with Michel Barnier, an EU negotiator. If conditions are not relaxed, the possible trade agreement will be similar to Canada, Japan and South Korea.

The fact that these will not be easy negotiations became clear when Mr Barnier rejected the prerequisites set by the UK for possible agreement models with the EU. Among other things, the UK no longer wants to make a financial contribution or have the free movement of people and also does not want to have to abide by European court rulings. This means that, if these conditions are not relaxed, the possible trade treaty will be comparable to Canada, Japan and Zuid Korea. These agreements do not guarantee the unhindered trading of cross-border goods.

This does not bode well for the Dutch horticultural sector. The message was clear: be prepared for what is expected as things stand, The limited transition period is expected to end on 31 December 2020. Mr Barnier indicated that, in this phase, his team is available for discussions with the business community. Waiting for clarity on the situation is far too risky for the all-important export interests. 'Better safe than sorry' comes to mind here.

GroentenFruit Huis is workly closely with the Dutch government to map out the effects Brexit will have. During the course of this year, GroentenFruit Huis expects to inform its members about which matters need to be arranged within the companies in order to avoid unexpected surprises.
