Chinese consumers no longer pursue the optimum price-performance ratio

China: Branding is the only way to go for Hebei fresh pears

China is a prominent country in the cultivation, production, and export of fresh pears. Out of every ten fresh pears in the world, seven have been produced in China. Hebei is the number one province in China when it comes to growing and exporting fresh pears. Furthermore, their most distinguished fruit is the fresh pear. It has been a leading product in the export of agricultural products from Hebei.

China imported 3,984 tons of fresh pears in the first half of 2017. Their total worth was 6.372 million USD, with an average price of 1,599 USD per ton. This was a decrease in tons of 25%, in total worth of 26%, and in average price of 1% in comparison with the same period in the year before. The main origins of imported fresh pears were countries such as Belgium, Argentina, The United States, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. Apart from an increase of imports from Belgium, all the other countries showed a reduction in comparison with the same period in the year before.

Following continued economic development, the average disposable income of Chinese citizens continues to grow. The qualitative changes in consumer behavior have become commonplace. Nowadays, Chinese consumers no longer pursue the optimum price-performance ratio. Instead, they often pursue unique products and brands. In addition, while the export volume of fresh pears from Hebei grows at a fast pace, at the same time, the intensity of competition in export is unprecedented. It is for these reasons that branding will become an important trend in the export of fresh pears.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly mature fresh pear trade, and an increasingly high level of industrialization, and with the support of government and customs departments like the Hebei Office for Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine, the people from Choice Fruit Alliance who represent Hebei fresh pear brands, forge a prime brand of high-quality fresh pears. They eagerly look forward to the overnight success of the Hebei fresh pear brand on the international fresh pear market.
