China: This year's fruit market is troublesome
Around Christmas, there are many different marketing formats, such as "Christmas apples" and "17.5 degree oranges". However, even after accumulating many years of experience, this year's fruit prices have been quite troublesome. The apple production has been the highest in many years, but, similar to oranges, the prices have been reduced dramatically. The drops in prices of these two products have brought about a drop in the overall fruit prices of 30% to 40% as well. On the retail market, however, even though the prices have dropped, this is not as apparent, but many traders find that they are unable to sell their products, making this the worst year in twenty years.
The Shanghai Fruit Industry Association revealed that the supply in 2017 was higher than the demand, leading to a drop in prices and slow-moving products. A representative states that this year's fruit prices dropped in different degrees. The overall price decrease is calculated at 25% to 30%, and might even reach 40%. Sales have also dropped over 30%. This year's fruit import prices have dropped over 20%, and some even close to 40%. Industry experts have stated that this year's fruit import is the largest it has been in almost ten years.
