China: Cold weather causes cherry prices to drop

Recently, the wholesale price of 5 kg of Chilean cherries in the Jiangnan wholesale fruit market was around 300 yuan [46.10 USD]. This is about 100 yuan [15.37 USD] cheaper than last year. Wholesale merchants say that the main reason for the fall in Chilean cherry prices is the extremely cold weather. It is difficult to transport products to the north, and this has caused markets in the south to drop the price of cherries.

Around the same time last year, Chilean cherries could sell for between 400 yuan [61.46 USD] and 500 yuan [76.83 USD]. The price this year has fallen a great amount by comparison. The price of cherries shows great fluctuations on a daily basis. The main reason for the recent drop is the influence of cold weather in the north. Fruit transports are unable to reach the north. They can only go as far as Guangdong and Guangxi. This creates a certain oversupply. In addition, Chilean cherries have had a good year. The production volume is larger than last year.
