China: Fruit farmers suffer losses after heavy snowfall

A heavy snowfall hit China recently. It was the biggest snowfall since the beginning of this winter, extremely strong, especially in the Northern China - in Jianghan region, Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces. WeChat users have flooded their news feeds with the pictures of this huge storm. It was not only greenhouses and apple markets that suffered from the snow, communications were blocked, too.

Since the roads were blocked, a lot of markets have faced troubles concerning supply. It is expected that soon the prices of fresh products will increase. On the contrary, customers' activity will decrease because of the cold weather. The future situation is difficult to predict, but the sellers will suffer losses either way. Their main hope is the upcoming Spring Festival, which always stimulates fruit sales. The amount of sold fruits increases by 30-40%.

The snowfall has a wide range and will continue for longer than usual. From the evening of January 5th until January 7, the snow has covered the eastern part of the Northwest China, East and North of China, Huang Huai and Yangtze-Huaihe areas. Guizhou and Hunan were hit by cold rains. The weather forecasters expect that snowfall will start again soon.
