Italy: Consumption increased by 13% at Coop over Christmas

Christmas week 2017 was very good for retail: fresh produce sales at Coop Italia registered +13.1% compared to 2016. The data emerged from a Coop-Nomisma poll combined with the "Rapporto Coop" consumption forecast.

2017 was better than expected, with a 1.5% increase in consumption. 2018 is also looking good thanks to the increased purchasing power of families.

Negative terms such as "fear" or "crisis" are no longer used as much (in 2017, they were mentioned by 10 and 7.6% of interviewees respectively, while they were mentioned only by 4.5% in the new report), while "recovery" (15.4%), "change" (15.1%), "wealth" (10.3%) and "new" (7.9%) are growing.

Forecasts report that consumption should increase by 2.1%.

The over 50s are more confident compared to the younger generations. Surprisingly, southern Italy is driving "recovery" (a term mentioned by 18% of interviewees).
