Guatemala: Heavy rainfall has no effect on Mangetout and Sugar Snaps season

“The season of mangetout and sugar snaps starts in Guatemala from November and runs till late April/May. Guatemala is feeling the effects of global warming. For example, in mid-October we experienced very heavy rainfall. Only in this period more rain was registered than during the complete rainy season of last year. This gave us a hard time, however, thanks to proper crop management, we were able to stabilize production and keep the damage limited”, explains Isabel Farfán from Asunción Export in Guatemala.

The company is mainly active in producing and exporting prepacked and loose mangetout and sugar snaps. “We don´t purchase our products in the local market. We work with our own groups of growers, and have our own farms. This distinguishes us from other exporters in Guatemala and we are in total control of the production. In total we have around 155 hectares of production, Global GAP certified since 2002 and For Life certified since 2013. In addition, we have our own packing house, which 2008 was the first facility certified BRC 5.0 in Latin America. We have been maintaining our Food Safety System ever since, through our annual BRC re audit and certification. In addition, since 2013 our packing house is For Life certified.”

The main export destinations are The Netherlands and the UK. Isabel says that the company is located 30 minutes from the Guatemala city international airport and only 7 to 8 hours’ drive from the ports. This makes it possible to export by air and sea. “We mostly export by sea, but during the start of the season we export by air, because it’s faster and the products need special conditions.”

Fruit Logistica

Being present at the Fruit Logistica isn’t just to meet existing clients or potential clients explains Isabel. “Besides sharing our story with existing and potential customers, we are also looking into the possibilities to diversify our product offer. For now, the focus is on baby zucchinis and rainbow baby carrots. With these new products, we automatically look into exporting to other countries.”

It’s important for the company to diversify and specialize in other products because at this moment they can only offer 7-8 months of work to their operational workers. Isabel concludes: “Our company has over 15 years of experience in the sector, but we are most proud of having employees in the packing house and in the field that are with us since the company started. These people are loyal to the company and we would like to be loyal to them. Therefore, we hope, by diversifying our portfolio that we can offer our employees work year-round.”

Asunción Export is present at the Fruit Logsitica, Pavilion 1.2 - booth A-07.
