"Moment of truth for the onion market"

Next week, Senegal will decide when to close its borders to Dutch onions. This means the Netherlands will soon lose one of its most important onion export markets. It is already good for more than 130 000 tonnes. "It is wait and see time, but I am afraid it is not good news for the second half of the season", says Jan Franje of the Dutch Franje Onions.

"Remarkably enough, there is movement in the growers' prices, but the bale prices are unyielding. On the growers' side, there is a bit of a mood, which I cannot explain. It was very busy up until 31 December, but I do not think we should look at enormous export volumes we have already had. We should focus on the future which is, in my opinion, less rose-coloured", Jan continues.

While Franje Onions always trades in a reasonable volume of organic onions, this is limited this year. "There has been little demand for organic onions this season", says Lan. "We cannot complain about the quality of the onions. Their colour is not the best, though. You can see our growers have been through hard times."
