Chinese garlic puts pressure on Argentinian garlic in the Brazilian market

Brazil annually imports a large amount of garlic, and both Argentina and China supply 45% of the import market. However, since the cost of Argentinian garlic is high, they can only claim that they face unfair competition with China in the Brazilian market.

Whether Argentinian garlic suffers from problematic prices or other issues, their market position in Brazil is far from ideal. This time, they claim, Chinese exporters attempted to move garlic through Uruguay to Brazil to avoid taxes on dumping. These shipments of garlic have no information on origin and have no trademark.

Brazil currently imports about 16 million boxes of garlic per year. Argentina and China each take up 45% of this volume, and the remaining 10% comes from Spain. The only difference is their price. Chinese garlic costs 19.45 USD per box. Spanish garlic costs 19.32 USD per box. Argentinian garlic, however, can not go lower than 25.74 USD per box.
