Pook-Coconut Crisps: Nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award

Germany: “For next year, we are planning two or three new flavors”

Crisps from apples, beets and sweet potatoes are already widely available on the market. For almost a year now, there have also been coconut crisps. With these unique products, PookSpaFoods is encountering great enthusiasm within the food industry. It is no coincidence that this start-up is one of the nominees for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award.

The range of the young company basically consists of three product lines: Chocolate Sea Salt, Original Sea Salt and Mango Sea Salt. Other products are currently being worked on. “Of course, we are not yet widespread in the market; we mainly sell through our online store,” says managing director Kanokporn Holtsch. She notes, however, that international enthusiasm for the product is substantial. “Our crisps can already be found in small quantities at various Edeka stores. In addition to this, the products are also available in Portugal, Switzerland, Italy and Iceland. And next year we want to expand even further, into Scandinavia.”

The invention of the crisps was a pure coincidence, says the Berlin lady with Thai roots. At the beginning of 2016, she was on a trip to the USA and saw similar crisps made from coconut. She immediately thought of her homeland where the coconuts are grown in large quantities. The company was founded relatively quickly, developed corresponding products and different flavors and then started production in Thailand. “After the products are manufactured and packed, they are transported to Germany. We mainly process coconuts with a lot of pulp. The left over juices will then be sold in Thailand.”

The left over juices are sold locally

Few start-ups are as successful within one single year as PookSpaFoods GmbH. But the company is in full development, says Mrs Holtsch. “For next year we are already planning two or three new flavors. We also organize regular tastings. We will also have those at the next Fruit Logistica.”

Visit the company from 7 to 9 February in Berlin, in Hall 21, stand C-11.
