Signing of work plan to export Ecuadorian bananas to Brazil
The Ecuadorian Agency for the Protection of Agricultural Quality (AGROCALIDAD) and the Directorate for Plant Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil (MAPA), have signed the Work Plan for the export of Ecuadorian bananas to the Brazilian market from 2018.
A delegation consisting of technicians from AGROCALIDAD, INIAP and the Ministry of Foreign Trade travelled to Brazil to negotiate the phytosanitary restrictions and hand out the Technical Report and the Work Plan for risk mitigation. In 2016, Brazil requested changes to the Work Plan. Once these were taken into consideration, Brazil concluded that all the phytosanitary issues had been resolved.
This achievement is the result of the inter-institutional work carried out for several years and represents a great opportunity for Ecuadorian banana producers.
"Fernando Cabezas, Executive Director of AGROCALIDAD said that "this is an incentive to boost the national economy, since the banana sector is an industry of vital importance for our agricultural sector."
Eduardo Ledesma, President of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE) said that "the opening of the Brazilian market for Ecuadorian bananas represents an opportunity to market the fruit in the Southern Cone. The work carried out by AGROCALIDAD together with the Ministry of Foreign Trade has been hugely beneficial for us. Our banana stands out for its flavour, quality and shelf life, among other qualities."
Richard Salazar, Representative of the Association of Banana Marketers and Exporters (ACORBANEC), said that "we have great prospects thanks to the opening of this market, since Brazil is one of the largest consumers of bananas, and although there are more producing countries in the region, our fruit is highly appreciated because of its quality, taste and shelf life, among other characteristics. I thank AGROCALIDAD for allowing the exporters to be involved in this process, since we play a very important role."
In 2016, Ecuador exported more than 5 and a half million tonnes to 71 destinations.
AGROCALIDAD will continue to enforce strict phytosanitary controls in order to make sure that export bananas are free of pests in all cases.
