China: Citrus fruit sells well in Jiangnan market

Temperatures dropped in Guangzhou in the last week of November. Because the weather has been dry and cold, consumers are showing an extra interest in juicy fruits that moisten the throat and clear the lungs. The fruits that recently received most attention in the Jiangnan market are citrus fruits such as Navel oranges, Nanfeng oranges, and kumquats, as well as apples and pears, such as Red Fuji apples, Aksu apples, and Chinese pears. In autumn and winter the amount of fruit on the market increases. With plenty of fruit the price is relatively stable, but within that stability is a slight downward trend.

In winter citrus fruits take the lead, but customers divide their attention between citrus fruits and apples. Northern cities are first among the fruit production areas, but in the markets there is a growing share for fruit from Hainan, such as the Hainan Hami melons, or coconuts. There is an ample supply of fruit in the Jiangnan market and trade flourishes, so the price is stable. However, as Christmas and New Year's Day approach, customers will be drawn in, and it is expected during this period that market sales will reach a new height.
