US: Cheaper produce could save thousands of lives per year, says study
A new study out of Tufts University in the United States has found that thousands of lives could be saved per year through price changes in just seven foods, TuftsNow reports.
Researchers found that price subsidies on healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and taxes on unhealthy ones like red meats and sugary drinks could help lower the number of annual deaths from diabetes, heart disease and stroke. A 10% change in price showed to prevent 23,000 deaths while a 30% change could save as many as 63,000 lives.
