Bulgaria: Domestic production down by two to three times in 20 years
The production of fruits and vegetables in Bulgaria dropped by two to three times in the period from 1992 to 2016, according to data cited by Mariana Miltenova, of the National Union of Gardeners in Bulgaria.
Imports have grown considerably and "we continue to eat imported fruits and vegetables, which in our opinion is unacceptable, given Bulgaria's wonderful soils and climatic conditions, as well as the experience we have in the production," said Miltenova.
More and more farmers are reluctant to grow fruit and vegetables and turn to grain crops, as 88% of the producers in Bulgaria receive only 20% of the subsidies; the remaining money is given to the big grain producers.
The growers believe that the financial support given to each producer should be the same percentage of the cost of each cultivated crop. "It would be ideal, for example, to subsidise 30-25-20% of the cost of production of any crop that is produced and sold at real market prices, as all producers would have the opportunity to assess what they should produce depending on the land, the tangible assets, the market conditions or the irrigation resources," concludes Miltenova.
