Italy: Patati' in extra top of the range market
"Around one hundred thousand Italian families choose our products every week. This a very important result for our brand and one that makes us think about what more could we do for our consumers in terms of quality, flavour and health."
"We are three brothers with a family background working in this sector. Over the past 50 years, we have specialised in the commercialisation of potatoes and high-quality productions," explains sales manager Vincenzo Bucciero (in the photo
"We grow and commercialise our potatoes with the objective of guiding final consumers - both housewives or restaurateurs - to use this tuber in line with its huge culinary potential."
"Our brand is strongly connected to the traditions and flavours of days gone by. To us, for example, the geographical area of origin of a product is essential. We only sell potatoes from specific areas which are recognised from a historical point of view, as we are convinced the soil and weather conditions of some areas have a considerable effect on the characteristics of a product."
Patat́ is Fratelli Bucciero's commercial brand. The company was established in the 1970s in Caserta and produces, purchases and commercialises a vast assortment of products including potatoes, onions and garlic.
It is now managed by brothers Vincenzo, Giovanni and Bruno, who constantly focus on nutritional balance and sustainability while at the same time trying to maintain good value for money. The human component is also essential: "our enthusiasm, commitment, punctuality and passion always characterised all our choices."
"We own 15 hectares plus a processing and storage facility covering 3,000 square metres. Although we purchase most of the produce from operators in Italy and abroad, almost all our potatoes come from Avezzano in Abruzzo and Emilia Romagna, Piedmont, Veneto, Puglia, Campania and Sicily."
"We buy potatoes from France, Germany and the Netherlands when they're difficult to buy in Italy like this year, for example. Prolonged drought caused a 30% drop in production, especially in Abruzzo and Campania."
"The produce is sold through the main Italian retailers. We supply potatoes with the same exact organoleptic qualities throughout the year despite the fact that they come from different production areas."
"At the moment we are commercialising excellent potatoes from France but the produce usually comes from Sicily from May onward. Our selection includes white, yellow, red and even purple potatoes and we provide them both washed or unprocessed."
"We are growing because we tackled the lack of produce with imports: luckily, we have no difficulty sourcing potatoes from abroad, although the Italian produce, and that from Abruzzo in particular, does have something extra."
"I couldn't say which potato variety is the most produced in the EU because, except for the Italian ones, I can't think of anything with unique taste and flavour characterised by a specific origin. We have true gems, especially in the Abruzzo area. The only problem is some producers haven't kept up with the times. I believe this is because they don't have suitable machinery and equipment to process high-quality potatoes, especially when it comes to the washed market."
