In October, the price paid to Mexican producers of Lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) in the citrus regions of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán and Oaxaca; the wholesale sales quotations at supply centers; the sale prices to consumers in selected cities, and the marketing margins of the fruit of Colima origin in the wholesale centers, self-service chains and traditional stores were as follows:
Prices paid to producers ($/kg)
In October, the highest average monthly price paid to Mexican lime producers in the fields, collection centers, and packing facilities of the biggest producing states in the country, was 7.74 $/kg, which was registered in the state of Guerrero. It was followed by Michoacan, with 6.91 $/kg, Colima, with 6.43 $/kg, and the lowest price was 5.81 $/kg, which was registered in the citrus region of Oaxaca.
Between January and October 2017, prices paid to the producers in the fields of the State of Colima had the following behavior. In January the fruit was paid at 8.50 $/kg, in February it increased to 14.61 $/kg, and in March it reached its highest level, 17.48 $/kg. Then, there was a decreasing trend. In April prices fell to 13.30 $/kg, and in May they slumped to 4.56 $/kg. In June they had a slight recovery and stood at 5.13 $/kg, but in July prices fell again reaching the lowest quote so far in the year, i.e. 4.46/kg. There was a slight recovery in August, as prices went up to 6.42 $/kg, and another fall in September as they stood at 4.87 $/kg. In October prices went up again and stood at 6.43 $/kg. Wholesale prices ($/kg)
According to official data from the National Information System on Market Integration (SNIIM) of the Ministry of Economy, the current wholesale prices of Mexican lime No. 5 of Colima origin, from highest to lowest are: 19.70 $/kg, which was registered at Guadalajara's Felipe Angeles Market. It was followed by the Merchants Union of la Paz, with 17.98 $/kg, the San Nicolas de los Garza Star Market, with 17.28 $/kg, Tijuana's India Supply Center, with 17.26 $/kg, the Distribution Centers of the city of Colima, with 15.31 $/kg, Guadalajara's Supply Market, with 14.55 $/kg, the Supply Market of Francisco Villa de Durango, 13.98 $/kg, the Francisco I. Madero Supply Central of Hermosillo, 13.23 $/kg, the Supply Central of Laguna de Torreon, 13.14 $/kg, and the Supply Market of Zacatecas, with 11.95 $/kg.
Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
According to data from INEGI, (National Consumer Price Index), the highest average sales price in October was 24.75 $/kg, which was registered in the self-service chains, supermarkets and traditional stores that operate in the city of La Paz. It was followed by the city of Guadalajara, with 24.54 $/kg, Tijuana, 24.00 $/kg, Hermosillo, 21.36 $/kg, Monterrey, 20.39 $/kg, Ciudad Acuña, 19.80 $/kg, Durango, 18.59 $/kg, the City of Colima, 17.88 $/kg, Fresnillo, 16.79 $/kg, and the city of Aguascalientes, which had the lowest price recorded, with 16.69 $/kg.
Trading margins (%)
The biggest trading margin, the difference between wholesale prices and prices paid to producers in the field, was registered in the Felipe Angeles Market in Guadalajara, with 206%. It was followed by the Union of Merchants La Paz, 180% and the San Nicolas de Garza Market, with 169%.
The gross trading margin, i.e. the difference between the average monthly wholesale price in the Felipe Angeles Market in Guadalajara (19.70 $/kg) and the average price paid to the lime producers in the region of Tecoman (6.43 $/kg) is 15.68 $/kg.
The highest trading marketing margin for the lime of Michoacan origin was recorded in Cuautla's Central Wholesale Market, with 123%. It was followed by Mexico City's Central Wholesale Market, with 104%, and the Wholesale Market of Ecatepec, Mex., with 68%.
The gross trading margin amounted to was 8.52 $/kg, i.e. the difference between the average monthly wholesale price of 15.43 $/kg in the Supply Center of Cuautla and the 6.91 $/kg average price paid to the producers in the citrus region of Apatzingan.
Production volumes (in tons)
During October, the citrus region of Colima, led production with 12,400 tons (49%); it was followed by Michoacan, with 7,800 tons (33%); Guerrero, with 1,870 tons (15%), and Oaxaca, with 830 tons (3%). Together, these entities produced more than 22,900 tons, i.e. 24% less than in September, when production stood at 29,940 tons.
