SeaLand monitors apples real time until destination
Apples are highly sought after overseas, mainly in the United States and Latin American countries, such as Colombia and Ecuador. For this reason, the export route should not be hampered by any issues that may affect the quality of the fruit. Precisely to prevent headaches for exporters, the shipping company Sealand is implementing real-time technology for the monitoring of perishable products.
Both green and red apples require specific care and conditions to preserve their attributes until they reach their commercial destination. After the harvest, the apples are placed in controlled atmosphere chambers and deposited in normal Reefer containers, which will be, from that moment, where they will remain during the trip. The idea is to delay the ripening of the apple, as well as its dehydration and the appearance of decay.
"Rapid cooling at a temperature of 0 °C and the use of refrigerated chambers where the apples can be stored for as long as necessary, with a relative humidity of about 95%, is the best way to prolong the fruit's post-harvest shelf life," explains the chief of the apple program at Unifrutti, Riccardo Gatti.
Remote Container Management
SeaLand, devoted exclusively to maritime transport in the Intra-Americas product market, has started implementing the Remote Container Management (RCM) system, which allows the monitoring of cargo from its origin to the final destination, delivering information regarding container temperature, the state of the power supply and its geolocation on-line while the product is being transported to the destination market.
"These characteristics make this tool unique in the market, which is not only beneficial for apples, but for any products of a perishable nature or which can be directly affected by alterations of the variables previously mentioned," confirmed Ignacio Urzúa, commercial manager of SeaLand.
By facilitating the collection of data during the course of the trip, the RCM guarantees the maintenance of the right temperature for the fruit's preservation, making it also possible to make any necessary changes. If there was a malfunction of the containers, corrective actions could be carried out and, in the same way, through automatic notifications, the 'RCM system' would give the owner of the cargo contract enough time to notify the fruit's importers.
