Kenneth Meyer, Natural Tropic:
"Spanish mango season not going as expected"
In mid-September, the Osteen mango season began in earnest at Natural Tropic. According to the Dutchman, Kenneth Meyer, the season is not yet progressing as well as predicted. "The organic season is less competitively priced than last year. This is also true for the conventional season. Israel and Brazil had larger volumes on the market for a longer period of time. The Spanish mangoes are traditionally somewhat more expensive. To be honest, I think we started the season with too-high prices."
"So, we must see this year as a learning curve in order to determine how we will market our Osteen mangoes next year. They remain an unique variety of mango, and in the end, we did sell them all", says Kenneth. "Now we are switching to the Keitt variety. We are starting with a limited volume. The problem with the Keitt is that they are generally available in large sizes, while the smaller sizes are more in demand."
Not too many large sizes
In two or three weeks, the avocado season will also start at Natural Tropic. "The forecasts look good and I predict reasonably high prices. There is talk that Chili ended their season earlier, which makes space for the Spanish avocados. The volumes from Spain will be roughly the same as last year, but with not too many large sizes. If we start early, we will also end sooner. I expect that we will already end the avocado season before May", says Kenneth.
The cherimoya from Malaga are also increasing in volume. "These are primarily destined for supermarkets. It remains a difficult product for day trading because it has a limited shelf life. The demand for this product is, however, increasing. We are also sending more organic cherimoyas to the Netherlands", says Kenneth. In December, the company also, again, has organic, as well as conventional, kumquats available."There is not a huge demand, but it is increasing every year."
