New apples launched at Fruit Attraction in Madrid
"Our Kissabel apples go beyond offering a new variety"
Select visitors to Fruit Attraction were given the opportunity to try a whole new type of apple at the Ifored press conference late Wednesday afternoon.
This international project will launch a new range of red-flesh varieties under the brand Kissabel, starting with the first commercial trials in Europe over the next few weeks, with the apples expected to be available on store shelves within two years, and the world market within 5 years.A chef cuts the Kissabel Juane variety so that press conference visitors can taste the apple for itself. Developed using natural techniques, the flavour of the Kissabel line ranges from mainly sweet to tart, the flesh colour varies from 30% red to solid red and the skin colour can be red, bi-coloured, orange or yellow. The harvesting period for the early varieties is the same as for Royal Gala, while the latest-ripening cultivars overlap with Cripps Pink. The first commercial orchards were planted in spring 2016.
Ifored has chosen three apple varieties, Kissabel Rouge, Orange and Juane to start with, but said that they are continually looking into additional red and pink flesh apples of various skin colours for future commercial production.
The different varieties at a glance:Kissabel Rouge
is recognisable for its deep red skin, which matches the flesh inside the apple. With red skin and flesh, this fresh, crisp variety has a bright colour and intense flavour, enriched with hints of berries.
Kissabel Orange is recognisable at a glance, and conceals a pinkish-red flesh. Firm and juicy, it has a perfect sweet-tart balance.

"This new range is the culmination of 20 years of work. Our Kissabel apples go beyond just offering a new variety, we believe that we are creating a new apple segment and we can't wait to bring them into the market," shared Emmanuel de Lapparent.
The IFORED project brings together 14 partners, in key locations around the world, from 13 different countries, giving a total output of 3 million tonnes of apples from 55,000 hectares of orchards.
