Spain: Request for creation of sweet fruit interprofessional
ASAJA has met with the general director of Productions and Agricultural Markets of MAPAMA, Fernando Miranda, and with the Deputy General Director of Fruits and Vegetables, Ignacio Atance, to analyse the serious crisis that the Spanish sweet fruit sector is undergoing, which started with the introduction of the Russian veto in 2014, and to study measures, both in the short and medium term, in order to manage and readdress the situation
The main measure requested by ASAJA to transform the sector and improve the market knowledge, efficiency and transparency is the creation of an Interprofessional Organization for the sweet fruit sector. In this sense, ASAJA considers it necessary to give a boost to the promotion of this type of fruit through actions focused on highlighting the quality of the products.
Also in the medium term, ASAJA defends the need to establish a pre-retirement and withdrawal plan for the sector, with the removal of plantations and control of new plantations, both in terms of acreage and varieties, with the objective of staggering and having full control on the production and therefore on the supply.
In the short term, actions are demanded to alleviate the financial difficulties that the producers are experiencing, such as the cancellation of Social Security contributions and, in particular, the repayment of the contributions paid since May; reductions in the cost of agricultural insurance; the reduction of Personal Income Tax (IRPF) modules and the establishment of new lines of funding through SAECA credits.
Asaja wished to recall that the sweet stone fruit sector is the main source of income for the population in large areas of Spain and is also related to economic development in these areas. However, in recent campaigns, prices have stood below production costs, leading to a situation that requires the adoption of urgent measures, which should be undertaken together by the Central Government and the regional governments of the areas affected.
