EU: Apple prices above 5-year average

The average price in Europe for apples was EUR 0,73/kg in September 2017. This is 30% higher than the five-year average. The reason for these high prices was the small volumes. This year's small volumes were caused by the frost that hit many European countries. These figures come from a report of the European Commission. The largest European production countries were Poland, Italy, France and Germany.

Big differences
In Poland, prices this season were 47% higher, in Germany 53%, in France 33% and in Italy, the price level was 5% higher than the five-year average. There were large variations in prices in September 2017. In Poland, it was EUR 0,38/kg, in Italy EUR 0,73 was being paid, in France it was EUR 1,11 and Germans paid an average of EUR 0,70/kg. Apple prices in Poland have, generally, been lower. Last year September, it was an average of EUR 0,26/kg.

Varieties
The most important varieties grown in the EU are Red Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp and Pink Lady. This is seen in the average production of 2013-2015. China has the highest consumption of apples. This country eats 58% of the total volume. After them it is the EU, followed by the USA.

Export and import
The export of apples from the EU climbed steadily until 2015. The volume then reached a total of 1 752 962 tonnes. In 2016, the export volume decreased to 1 599 052 tonnes. Europe also imports apples. This happens, particularly, in the months of April to June. The import peak is usually in June or July. Russia imports the most apples in the world (from 2011-2015). When you look at the import value, Germany is the country that spent the most money on apples during those years. Other large apple importers are the United Kingdom, Belarus, Mexico and the US.
