School Fruit Program: 25.8 million euros for German schools

On the 1st of August 2017, a new EU Fruit and Vegetable Program was launched in German schools with the aim of stimulating healthy eating habits. In the participating schools, fruit, vegetables and milk products are handed out and a special educational program has been initiated.

The program can be implemented in the entire EU on the first day of the school year 2017/2018 and the students can be provided with fresh fruit and vegetables. Germany receives a budget of about 37 million euros (44 million USD) of which 25.8 million euros (30.4 million USD) go to fruit and vegetables and 10.9 million euros (12.8 million USD) to milk.

The educational program has the aim of explaining to students the importance of healthy food and how food products are made. The EU member states can decide for themselves how they want to implement the program. In addition, they have the possibility to add national aid to the EU contribution in order to finance the program.

The Central Association of Horticulture (ZVG) has repeatedly pointed out the importance of healthy food with fresh fruit and vegetables from seasonal and regional production. The association supports the goal of the school fruit and vegetable program: providing young people with products rich in vitamins and nutrients and informing them about a balanced diet.
