Pieter van Gog leaves Best of Four:

"I've built up my own customer base, now I'm marketing for myself"

"The production of our German nurseries goes directly to the market. The customers that we built there, are now also asking for Dutch product. We will now supply them directly." Pieter van Gog, of Van Gog Kwekerijen, said. He is leaving Best of Four and will take care of the sales for his Dutch cucumbers, strawberries and tomatoes himself from now on.

Cucumbers, strawberries and tomatoes
Pieter has cancelled his membership of the club as of January 1. "We have customers directly among the store chains. Supplying them directly is going well and is something that many Dutch players can't do - there is often still trade in between. This is why we will take care of the sales of the cucumbers, strawberries and tomatoes from the Dutch nurseries ourselves as well."

In Germany Peter is currently extending the nursery. In December the new plants will go into the greenhouse and next year not only tomatoes, but peppers will be grown on the complex. The greenhouse vegetables are marketed under the brand Luther. The Dutch products will not receive this title. "That's Dutch produce." Germany will be the main target market.

Pieter doesn't mind not being able to use GMO subsidies anymore. "We aren't building in the Netherlands and we were never connected to a recognised union in Germany, so we can't use GMO. It also limits you in your trade freedom towards the market. The freedom to do business is more important to us."
