Italy: Harvesting of golden kiwis ten days early
According to an operator, the harvesting of golden kiwis (SunGold-G3, Soreli, Jintao etc.) started 10 days earlier than 2016.
Volumes should be higher than last year due to the fact that new orchards have entered into production. Average grades, however, are slightly smaller than 2016.
Soreli golden kiwi sales have already started and SunGold will be available soon. Jintao will become available around week 43.
Even though the production of golden kiwis is increasing in Italy, demand on a global level - mostly in the Far East but in Europe as well - exceeds supply.
Early green kiwi varieties have been available for a while and are actually almost finished thanks to the good demand. As regards the Hayward variety, harvesting should start between weeks 42 and 46. In this case too, grades expected are smaller than 2016 even though there's the hope that they will get slightly bigger in the weeks before harvesting (weather permitting).
Sales prospects are good due to the lack of produce from the southern hemisphere (both Chile and New Zealand).
"We hope commercialisation won't be too early, as we don't want produce with less than exceptional organoleptic qualities on the market."
The first exports will start in weeks 41-42, with larger volumes from weeks 44-46. In Europe, commercialisation should start in week 44, with larger volumes from week 46 onward.
It wouldn't make sense to bring sales forward too much as the fact that volumes are lower means demand should be good for February-April 2018.
