“Dutch courgette prices becoming muddied”

The supply of Dutch outdoor courgettes can currently not satisfy demand. “The import from Spain is not starting yet either,” says Leander van de Griend from ZON fruit & vegetables. “That would take some of the pressure off the Dutch market.”

“Both growers and customers are unhappy with the situation. Growers have to supply, which means there’s less available product for auctions. Besides, some retailers currently have courgette promotions, which puts even more pressure on the market.” This imbalance muddies prices. “At auction, the courgettes are sold for 90 cent, but they are on the shelves in retail for 79 cent. It would be nice if retail also adjusted its prices.”
