The market is open 24 hours a day, six days a week, with adjusted opening hours on Saturday from 10am to 8pm for maintenance. The fruit and vegetable market spans 45 hectares, with 10 hectares located indoors and is occupied by 350 larger Polish traders. There are 1,300 places located outside on the terrain, for growers and smaller company's to sell their goods outside from their vehicles or stands.
"A few years ago there was a fire in the halls which completely destroyed the indoor facilities. We rebuilt it all two years ago, and now the buildings have been completely modernised. Each indoor trader has a place to store and show their fruits and vegetables on the ground level, with offices located directly above on the first floor," shared Maciej Kmera from Bronisze.
It is estimated that the market handles around 1.2 million tons of produce per year, with 10,000 trucks going through the market every day.
Polish consumers prefer to have domestic produce when available and this can be seen during the summer months at the market as well.
"During the summer months, the largest part of turnover happens in the outside areas of the market, where the domestic fruits and vegetables are sold by the growers. The prices are cheaper and products like cabbage, cauliflower, roots vegetables, the covered production of bell peppers and stone fruits, are very popular. Products there are purchased primarily for food service and restaurants and the larger businesses inside the building is for larger customers and are sent directly to the logistics center," says Kmera.
A recent addition to the market was a hall specifically for fresh flowers and plants. The trading hours for wholesale are from 3am-5am and they stay open after that for flower shops and other small businesses.
"It's not very common in Poland to give flowers for things like birthdays and other occasions like that. Many feel like it is a waste of money and would prefer to give something like wine as a gift, so it can be a difficult market here for imported flowers," concluded Maciej.
