"We are mainly talking about oranges," explains Mohamed Gonbour, Director at the company. "But also some grapes, last year we did not export grapes but now the market is open."
Masr Fruit exported some oranges to China last season which went very well and the feedback was very good according to Mohamed, "We will make programs with these customers this season. Export will start right after Chinese New Year and we will supply the market for around five months, we are really looking forward to it."
To China they will only send the premium oranges which is the main focus in China.
"I think that if you are looking at sending bulk to China you will have a difficult time as there will be a lot of Egyptian oranges sent there this year, you really need to stand out and the way to do that is quality."
Egypt has a perfect window into China, explains Mohamed, "You only have Spain and the US, South Africa comes later. We have very competitive prices from Egypt, so we really have a good position."
Masr Fruit have just opened an office in Hong Kong under the name Masr Fruit Hong Kong.
"Having an office in Hong Kong shows people you are serious about the market, you are here in the middle of where it all happens," said Mohamed. "We are here in China ready to meet the clients, this is essential because it is a very different market from Europe and we really want to put a lot of effort and really understand it and the consumers and get to know what they are actually looking for. Every time we travel to China we learn new things. There is a lot of room to grow in China and we think the demand will only grow in years to come. The supply will increase this year, there will be a lot of oranges which will have an effect but I think the demand will also increase," concludes Mohamed.
