Italy: Asparagus harvesting machines to be brought into compliance

In order to safeguard the health and safety of workers, white asparagus harvesting machines must comply with what is set out by the CE mark. It is also possible to bring into compliance all machines that do not currently do so with a safety system called Stop&Go Recogniton.

The principle is simple: the device detects operators in the harvesting area and brings all machines into compliance with EU regulation 42/2006. As is known, all machines sold in Europe must comply with this regulation to bear the CE mark, otherwise they might be confiscated and a fine might be issued.

Functioning of the safety device

Aurenzo Bagioni, owner of the company that designed and manufactured the device, explains that this innovation (patents have already been deposited) bridges a gap regarding the safety of this kind of equipment. The device has a reasonable price and enables asparagus producers from all over Europe to bring all their harvesters into compliance. The low cost is due to the fact that the machine was produced in series, as a lot are expected to be sold to meet client needs.

An optical sensor detects the presence of the operator and lets the machine continue only if he is in the safe area. This is because the European directive prohibits its advancing without an operator driving, while there are still machines that work without a braking system in case of danger.

The research carried out by Bagioni was inspired by articles 3.3.4 and 4.2.1 of the EC directive, according to which a machine cannot advance without an operator controlling it.

"We are available to provide free advice and information to clients for any update they wish to carry out before the next harvesting campaign. In case of companies with a large number of machines, we are happy to provide personalised assistance at a competitive price."
