Ukrainian apple producers: existing customers remain the priority

It's a nice problem to have perhaps, but Ukrainian producers expect a difficult 2017/18 apple season because of a gap in the most common varieties on the EU market, which has brought them a lot of interest from foreign buyers.

"After a spring of frosts, hail in August, unusual heat during the summer and strong winds, it is going to be a competitive year for growers. Those who are prepared to export quality products, should have the opportunity to sell with good margins on the export markets," said Maxim Kulik, a Ukrainian Ag consultant.

"Royal Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Braeburn, Red Prince and more than 10 other varieties are ready to be exported this year. All of our clients are waiting for the harvest to end and the sales to start. The total amount of orders we are receiving is twice as much as we can handle, but we would rather have less sales and be sure that we are only sending quality products."

Maxim said that their priority remains their existing contracts, along with the new clients from the UK, Germany, Sweden, Holland and the Czech Republic. India and the UAE market are also offering lots of opportunity this year.

"We had a difficult and messy start to the harvest period. Apple prices are currently around €0.50-0.60/kg for sorted apples and €0.15-0.20 for industry apples, which is a little lower now during the harvest period. The situation will be different once the apples go into storage. Poland, Italy and other EU markets will have the most effect on the market prices," said Maxim.

"After gaining a lot of experience last year, I think that we are ready for all of the market requirements from the EU, the UAE and other markets. Glued cartons, bushels, plastics bags, plates and other packing will be available this year and we will do all we can to get maximum added value. We are focused on building long-term relationships and aren't just interested in a one-time only big payment."
