“Thailand is a growing market for fruit, vegetables and plants”

As of 1 September, shipping agent Milestone Fresh has started a branch in Thailand, called Milestone Logistics Thai. In recent years, the company has settled in many different countries, including Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala. Co van Es explains why they chose Thailand: “We work with five different agents there, and we want better communications and flows of information. Besides, we see Thailand as a growing market for both fruit and vegetables and for plants.”

Peter van der Klift indicates they had already been active in Thailand for a while. “We already did quite a bit, especially for plants. Rather a lot is required regarding logistical service providing in Thailand. We now have our own office, and will meet these requirements in our own way, also for the fresh produce sector. We now have someone there who is dedicated to working for us. That’s naturally quite an investment, but if all goes according to plan, we’ll earn it back quite soon.”

Up till now, logistics there happened in the Thai manner, Peter explains. “This doesn’t necessarily mean anything negative, but it’s different from what we’re used to in several ways, such as at service level. We choose complete transparency as soon as the grower supplies their product. We ‘de-burden’ the customer from A to Z. Currently, many importers are at the mercy of information of the suppliers, but they know nothing of certain links in the supply chain. We keep the customers informed from the moment they place their order. We do that in all countries in which Milestone is located, and we receive positive responses to that. We want to copy this concept in Thailand.”
