Italy: Effective rootstock against kiwi vine decline

A rootstock representing a valid solution against kiwi vine decline - Ceradini Group (Verona) illustrated the potential of Sav1 to a few companies affected by root asphyxia. Over 150 took part, a demonstration of just how much the area is affected by the problem.

"We have proof that this rootstock is the answer to root asphyxia, that's why we have applied for the patent. In areas where vine decline caused the uprooting of all plants, Sav1 rootstocks vegetated without any problem, while Hayward trials died again," explains Massimo Ceradini.

This rootstock has a very strong root system of the tap-rooting kind and is more resistant to drought as well as water stagnation. In addition, it is less vigorous with narrower internodes and has a higher percentage of fruiting buds.

Vine decline hit the area 4-5 years ago and, since then, over 1500 hectares have been uprooted out of 3200. Asphyxia damage has been observed in Piedmont and Friuli Venezia Giulia as well.

In 2016, producer Marco Girelli followed Massimo's advice and used Sav1 on the same land where vine declined had affected all crops. Plants are now thriving and it's as though root asphyxia never even hit the area.

Other producers in the Bussolengo and Palazzolo area have also tried Sav1 and obtained excellent results as well.

"It's suitable for all kiwi varieties and it also seems to be resistant to Psa with an early harvest. In addition, results were good on all soils, even the heavy clayey ones."

The next technical day will be held on 12th September. Booking compulsory at the phone no. below.
