Following the scourges of Hurricane Franklin a few weeks ago, which affected the region's citrus fields, the export of Persian limes has been minimally affected, since the production area that supplies the balers of this area is very wide, and it is thanks to them that the work continues to take place.
According to Rodrigo Calderón Salas, director of Citrus Cadillo, he mentions that, "the affected area was at the part of Martinez towards the beach. They were more badly hit in the highlands. But the real damage was done to production, which fell by 25% to 30%."
The worst affected areas were Vega de Alatorre, in the zone that corresponds to Costa Esmeralda. In some hectares of Martínez de la Torre, where the wind gusts caused a small loss in presentation qualities, 15 to 20% of the unharmed ones value remains.
Fortunately, municipalities such as Misantla, Atzalan, San José Acateno, Ayotosco, among others did not suffer damage to their plantations. Given these places have good fruit supplies they should be able to meet the continuing export demand.
This situation has caused prices to remain high, which has benefited the producers.
