Cuba: New maturation chambers help in banana demand

Less than two months after its start-up, the six maturation chambers installed in the Empresa de Cultivos Varios La Cuba company, in the municipality of Baraguá in Ciego de Ávila, continue to strengthen the advantages of this investment for the quality of a product such as bananas, whose demand grows, above all, in the national tourism network.

This has led to the expansion of the limited capacity that the company had until then, with only five chambers with space for 1,000 boxes of fruit (in each one), while those that came into operation last month, can assimilate up to 2,500 boxes, individually.

As explained by the young leader of the collective working in the center for profit and maturation, Alexander Batista Pareta, this is not the only or even the main advantage of this new development. To this is added the possibility of having a much more modern and efficient technology, which allows a more accurate regulation of temperature, humidity, and other requirements, depending on the quality and nature of the product.

The investment comes to about $ 852,000.00, and can be repaid by the Avilanian company in about a year, according to what its directors explained to Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers, when visiting the province early in the past month.

Immersed in a continuous process, from Monday to Sunday, the cameras become the starting point for the sending of considerable volumes of the banana known as Great Dwarf to the tourist centers located in Varadero, Matanzas; Cayo Santa Maria, Villa Clara; Trinidad, Sancti-Spiritus; St. Lucia, Camagüey; Guardalavaca, Holguín; Cienfuegos, Havana, Pinar del Río and Santiago de Cuba, among other destinations.

Due to the growing acceptance of this variety of banana, the favorable effect of climate and soil in this area on fruit sugars, as well as the yields it is reporting in the productive order, the province must triple in the period 2018-2019, the current planted area of Great Dwarf.
