On Monday, August 21st, WP Rawl, grower, processor and shipper of leafy greens in the U.S. will be in one of the three largest areas in the total solar eclipse’s path of totality.
The Midlands of South Carolina, as this region is called, is buzzing about with excited chatter regarding the upcoming solar activity. Many visitors will be in the city for what USA Today has called, “one of the best places to watch the eclipse because of its lengthy duration of totality.” These visitors are from all over the U.S. and some even as far as Europe. NASA estimates that the entire state of South Carolina could see 1 million visitors if the weather is clear. The next time a total solar eclipse will be visible from the Columbia, S.C., area is 2078.
The first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. was in1979, and was not visible from South Carolina; the last visible total solar eclipse over the state was in 1970 when most of WP Rawl’s employees were not even born! Unfortunately, this was not visible to the Midlands area and was only seen along the South Carolina coast. The projected duration of the eclipse ranges from 2 minutes and 30 seconds to 2 minutes and 36 seconds.
“Since this total eclipse could be a once in a lifetime event for some of our employees, we are stopping all production for the company and holding an eclipse viewing party Monday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” says Ashley Rawl, vice presidents of sales, marketing and product development. “We are supplying all employees with special WP Rawl-branded viewing glasses and other special treats they can enjoy while mingling with their co-workers and enjoy the phenomenon.”
In the company’s 92 years this will be the first time product will be growing in the path of such a historical event.
