UK: Greenhouse vegetable production in full swing

Next month on September 20-21, the UK tomato industry will once again unite in Kenilworth for the 20th edition of the British Tomato Conference.

The state of domestically grown produce will once again be an important topic on the conference agenda and the TGA will share some insight in how they have used online and offline marketing tools to ensure the position of the British tomato in the UK retail shelves. As well as this, Emma Fencott of Kantar Worldpanel will share insights into tomato retail figures.

For those who cannot wait, we have analysed the current offerings in the British supermarkets this week, with the help of data provided by market intelligence service ProduceView.

Their team visited the UK supermarkets again to see where all of the greenhouse vegetables are coming from. Most of the UK and Dutch growers are in full production.

In regards to baby plum tomatoes, the British growers are supplying 4 out of 9 visited retailers; Asda, M&S, Waitrose and Aldi. Lidl offered Spanish tomatoes and Sainsbury, Tesco and the Co-op offered Moroccan tomatoes. Prices are as high as £ 7.60 per kilo at Waitrose to as low as 3.- £/KG at Asda and Tesco.

Cucumbers have better availability this week; 5 out of 9 retailers offered British cucumbers: Sainsbury, Asda, Co-op, M&S and Waitrose. German discounters Lidl and Aldi offer Dutch cucumbers this week, just like Tesco and Morrisons (who offered British the week before).

Prices for cucumbers are as low as 44p at Aldi and Lidl and as high as 55p at Waitrose and Co-op.

British red peppers can be found at Sainsbury's, Morrisons and M&S this week. The rest of the retailers all offered Dutch red peppers. The most expensive pepper was offered by Co-op for 65p. Aldi and Lidl offered the lowest cost red peppers for 47p.
