During July, the price paid to producers of Mexican lime. or sour lime with seeds, in the producing regions of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, and Oaxaca; wholesale quotations in supply plants; consumer prices in selected cities in the country; and the trading margins of the fruit of Colima origin in wholesale centers, self-service chains, and traditional stores that operate in the selected cities were as follows:
Prices paid to producers ($/ kg)
In July (2017), the highest average monthly price paid to Mexican lime producers in the fields, collection centers, and packing houses in the biggest producing states in Mexico was 4.90 $/kg, which was recorded in the state of Michoacan, followed by 4.46 $/kg in the state of Colima, 4.30 $/kg in Oaxaca, and the lowest price was 3.16 $/kg, which was recorded in the state of Guerrero.
According to data from the Mexican Lime Product System (SIPROLIMEX), the following activity was observed in the citrus region of Colima during January-July 2017 period: in January the price of the fruit was 8.50 $/kg. In February it increased to 14.61 $/kg. It achieved its highest level in March, 17.48 $/kg. Then it decreased to 4.56 $/kg in May. In July decreased slightly and reached 4.46 $/kg.
Wholesale prices ($/kg)
According to official data from the National Information System on Market Integration (SNIIM) of the Ministry of Economy, the highest price achieved by the Mexican lime No. 5 caliber in the wholesaler centers and the supply centers that sell the fruit of Colima origin was 19.00 $/kg, which was recorded at the Union of Merchants of La Paz, BCS. It was followed by 17.67 $/Kg at the Felipe Angeles Market Guadalajara, Jal., 17.00 $/kg at the ESTRELLA market of San Nicolás de Garza, NL, 16.00 $/kg at Guadalajara's Wholesale Market, Jal.,13.00 $/kg at the Francisco I. Madero Wholesale Market at Hermosillo, Son., 12.50 $/kg at the Francisco Villa Wholesale Center at Durango, Dgo, and $ 12.44 / kg in Colima.
Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
According to INEGI data, within the selected cities, the highest average monthly sales price to consumers was recorded in the supermarket chains, supermarkets and traditional stores operating in the city of Tijuana, BC., it was followed by la Paz, BC: 21.69 $ / kg, Monterrey, NL: 19.00 $/kg, Colima, with 15.35 $ / kg, and the lowest consumer price was detected in the city of Guadalajara, Jal.: 15.20 $/kg.
Trading margins (%)
During the month of July, the highest margins were found in the city of Tijuana, BC: (414%), and the lowest margins were located in the city of Guadalajara, Jal., (241%).
The highest trading margin difference in pesos was 17.43 $/kg, as the average monthly price paid to the Mexican lime producer in the Tecoman citrus region, Col., was 5.13 $/kg, while the average price paid by consumers in supermarket chains, retail chains and traditional stores located in the city of Tijuana, BC was 22.56 $/Kg.
Meanwhile, the lowest trading margins in pesos stood at 10.07 $/Kg, as the average monthly price paid to Mexican lime producers in the citrus region of Tecoman, Col. was 5.13 $/kg, and the average sales price to consumers in retail chains, supermarkets and traditional stores located in the city of Guadalajara, Jal. was 15.20 $/Kg.

According to data from SIPROLIMEX-COLIMA, about 31,860 tons of Mexican lemons were harvested during July. The state of Colima produced 14,700 tons (46%), Michoacan, 11,400 tons (36%); Oaxaca, 4,450 tons (14%), and Guerrero, 1,310 tons (4%). Together, these entities produced more than 31,860 tons, i.e. 9.6% more than the 29,070 tons produced in June.
Colima's limes to Moscow
The president of the State Council of Lime Producers from Colima (COEPLIM), Oscar Avalos Verdugo, said they were already conducting the first technical and economic analyzes to penetrate the Asian and European markets.
He also stressed that, in addition to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where they are already conducting trials, Mexico has the opportunity to export the Mexican lime produced in Colima to the capital of Russia, Moscow.
"We have the possibilities of selling limes in Moscow; currently, they cost 7 dollars a kilo in Moscow, and we see the possibility of being able to reach those markets," he stated. However, he could not specify the volume that they could export to this destination.
"It takes us about 45 days, by boat, to reach that destination. This means that, under certain cooling and management conditions it is feasible to take Mexican limes, particularly those from Colima, to that destination," he said. (Diario de Colima, 08/08/2017)
