The sowing of citrus and particularly Persian lime is becoming increasingly important for the agricultural producers of Sinaloa, who see this crop as a new productive option to maize, and which allows them to diversify their crops and offers a better profitability in the short term.
According to the Agricultural Validation and Monitoring System (Sivasa) operated by Sinaloa's State Plant Protection Committee, in close coordination with the Local Vegetable Sanitation Boards, the area devoted to the production of Persian lime in the state reached 1,347 hectares.
The areas with the highest growth rates in the planting of this citrus are Valle del Fuerte, with 400 hectares, El Evora with 279 hectares, Culiacan with 248 hectares, Elota with 198, and El Carrizo with 44, among others.

Productive option
Marte Vega Roman, the head of Sagarpa's District 001, said that the greatest growth of the Persian lime was in the north, where producers had discovered that this crop was a good productive option that would even allow them to start exporting, as it has a good acceptance in the international markets.
He also said that this citrus' planted area had been gradually increasing, partly because of the programs undertaken with the support of the authorities for the distribution of vegetative material that have allowed producers to expand their production areas.
In the next few years, he said, the areas devoted to this crop will most likely continue to rise in Sinaloa, as producers are interested in diversifying their crops, especially in areas when this crop represents a better production option than maize; as it adapts to intermediate quality land, guarantees good levels of production and, most importantly, the possibility of access to export markets.
