A new collapsible container to revolutionize maritime transport

A collapsible container might revolutionize maritime freight, with the support of the Port Authority of Valencia and the main shipping companies operating in that port. The 20-foot collapsible container is able to place 5 folded units in the space occupied by a current standard container, thereby minimizing logistical and transportation costs, according to the digital newspaper Comarcalcv.com.

Today, 25% of sea traffic is made up of empty containers, occupying a space that Navlandis' ZBox container would minimizes to a fifth. The 20-foot container complies with all ISO and CSC certifications, ensuring all loading, resistance and watertightness requirements of the logistics industry, with the same dimensions as a standard container. In addition, it is manufactured with the same parts as the standards require.

The ZBox container allows increasing the flexibility of management of empty containers, increasing the availability of the equipment for its complete use. "It will reduce company operating costs by up to 50% and CO2 emissions by up to 20%," said Navlandis CEO Miguel Navalon, who also said that they were easy to collapse, and required less handwork. Therefore, the company will make a series of trial routes to check the suitability of the container.

The president of the Port Authority of Valencia. Aurelio Martinez, said that the number of empty transports in the world today is about 164 million TEUs, which is why he supports Navlandis' ZBox container. In that context, he invited investors and the community to support the initiative. "An innovation introduced into a port is quickly replicated by the rest of the world's ports," he said.

The Regional Secretary of Economy, Maria Jose Mira congratulated the people behind the ZBox and highlighted its benefits, commitment to sustainable development, and clear economic and environmental benefits to society.

At present, it is estimated that there is a worldwide fleet of 40 million units (TEUs). In 2014, shipping companies bought 5 million new containers, a market that moves about US $ 12 billion annually, in which Navlandis aims to sell 3,000 units in 2019.
