Lack of Greek export leads to lower domestic prices

The Greek wholesale market for stonefruit is currently suffering from a lack of produce of sufficient quality for export. As this produce remains on the domestic market, the supply on the Greek market becomes larger than usual, causing lower prices and diminished profit margins.

“The volume of fruits and vegetables that we export right now is limited. We expect our sales volumes to increase, but right now there isn’t that much demand for stonefruit. For instance, apricots are very cheap as the quality wasn’t good enough for export,” says Director Tsakiris Iraklis of Tsakiris Iraklis & Co.

In general, all prices for pretty much all types of produce are lower than last year. Production has risen, while export volumes have not.

According to Iraklis, the types of Greek produce that generate the most sales are clementines and oranges during the winter, watermelons and melons in summer and tomatoes all year round.

“Throughout all of Europe, the competition in the wholesale market has increased and we’re having some difficulties in exporting some of our products. For instance, we’ve got a large supply of watermelons which has lead to very low prices at wholesale level. This in turn has lowered our profit margins to nearly zero and has caused problems for Greek growers.”
