Protect the Austrian potato instead of boycotting the harvest

For the first time. trade chains are to be obliged by a political party to dispose of 30,000 metric tonnes of potatoes due to wireworm damage - enough to feed 600,000 Austrians for a whole year.

The call made by Helga Krismer (Die Grünen NÖ [The Green Party, Lower Austria]) to boycott domestic potatoes is a direct attack against local agriculture. An international comparison shows that MOCAP is also used in other European countries. And not without reason. Belgian, Dutch, French and British crops are protected by MOCAP. In many European countries other insecticides are also permitted. The agricultural chamber of Lower Austria is amazed that a parliamentary party is denying our farmers professional and responsible action.

The facts on fighting wireworm
The planting of potatoes is practically finished. MOCAP is applied by placing one granule under the tuber. At this point, only the mother tuber (which is not meant for consumption) is in the ground. The daughter tubers are meant for eating, which are yet to develop over the summer period. The insecticide is not taken in by the daughter tubers, leaving no risk in the crop.
