"This year the '8424' variety of watermelon will enter the market on around 20 May, which is 10 days early, compared to previous years. The supply is expected to continue until the end of September. The earlier supply is mainly the result of the early sowing and early arrival of high-temperature days," said Mr. Zhiqiang Fan from Zhiyin Agricultural Technology Ltd. in Xiaxian County.

"As for the market price of watermelons, it is expected to go up this season. This is caused by a few factors. Firstly, we standardized our cultivation to improve the watermelon quality. Moreover, we started to work with more domestic dealers we met at the Asian Fruit Expo last year and expanded our marketing channels. Lastly, some big supermarkets and fruit chain stores also started to order from us."

Early days of the greenhouses
"Our company was founded in 2015 and we have over 3,000 acres of greenhouses for watermelon cultivation. Our main variety is the 8424 round watermelon. Through traditional marketing channels, our products with the Yurun Brand are sold to our own store in Xinfadi in Beijing and dealers in Shanxi Province, as well as supermarkets or fruit chain stores in Beijing, Chongqing and Changsha.
