Mexican lime prices and trading margins

During the month of March, the prices paid to the producer of Mexican lime (sour) in producing areas; wholesale and consumer prices in several cities in Mexico, and the trading margins for this citrus fruits in three selected cities (Guadalajara, Jal., Monterrey, NL, and Tijuana, BC), stood as follows:

Prices paid to producers ($/ kg)
In March 2017, the highest average price paid to the field producer in the biggest lime producing entities in Mexico was 17.64 $ / kg, in the citrus region of Apatzingan, Michoacan, and it was followed by 17.48 $/kg, in Tecoman Valley, Colima. (SIPROLIMEX-COLIMA)

Wholesale prices ($/kg)
The highest monthly average wholesale price, 29.98 $ / kg, was observed in the "Estrella" Abasto Market in San Nicolas de Los Garza, NL, and the lowest price, 26.00 $ / kg, was observed in the Central Supply Market of Mexico City.

The highest average wholesale price of No. 5 Mexican lime ,34.87 $ / kg, took place in the Union of Merchants La Paz, Baja California South, and the lowest price, $ 18.46 / kg, was located in the Supply Center INDIA of Tijuana, Baja California. (SNIIM)

Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
The highest average monthly consumer price, 41.60 $/kg, was detected in supermarket chains and traditional stores located in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, while the lowest price, 33.73 $ /kg, was recorded in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. (INEGI)

Trading margins (%)
The highest marketing margin was located in the city of Tijuana, BC: 138%, and the lowest one in the city of Guadalajara, Jal.: 93%.

The marketing margin between the average consumer prices in supermarket chains and traditional stores located in the city of Tijuana, BC ($ 41.60 / kg) and the average monthly price paid to producers in the citrus region of Tecoman, Colima, (17.44 $/kg) stands at $ 24.12 pesos per kg. 

The lowest marketing margin was 16.25 $/ kg, as consumers in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, were charged an average of 33.73 $/k, and producers in the citrus region of Tecoman, Colima, were paid 17.48 $ / kg. 

The margin is calculated as the percentage made by intermediaries over final consumer prices.

Production volumes (t)
According to the records of SIPROLIMEX-COLIMA, in March (2017) the main lime producing states produced a total of 28,660 tons. The state of Michoacan led production with 59%, followed by Colima with 23%, Oaxaca with 15%, and finally Guerrero with 3%.
