Large volumes of Indian grapes depress EU prices
"Now India is into peak volumes, but in the last few weeks big volumes were still being sent to Europe to catch the good market prices. But, as happens with the market dynamics, the prospect of big volumes depressed the prices," explains Nagesh Shetty from Deccan Produce. "It is not so much that there is a huge volume of grapes from India this season, more that many people sent lots of grapes at the same time."
The harvest has been good however, and the packing was busy but exporters have now realised that the prices are not what they were so packing has eased off and export volumes are significantly lower. Much of the fruit is being diverted to the domestic market where there is increased demand.
"There are also more grapes going to Russia and also to the Middle East, but there is only so much these markets can take" according to Nagesh.
