Mexico: Middlemen raise price of limes up to 600% in three months

The National Peasant Confederation (CNC) demanded that the government act strongly against the middlemen who have increased the price of a kilo of limes above 80 pesos, an increase higher than 600%, which makes them almost twice as expensive as a kilo of chicken, beef or pork. According to the Confederation, this increase has caused irritation and despair among domestic consumers.

Senator Gerardo Sánchez García, president of the CNC, condemned the increase caused by the middlemen and said that it had led to a drop in sales in large supermarkets.

The state legislator said it was unacceptable that the kilo of limes was worth more than the minimum wage in Mexico, which had a 3.9% increase at the beginning of the year and amounts to 67.29 pesos. In the same three-month period, lime prices increased from 12 to 80 pesos, mainly in northern regions of the country.

This increase, he said, is mainly due to the middlemen, not to the pests, such as the yellow dragon, or to the violence in Michoacan, which has been argued. It's a marketing strategy that we are beginning to see happen every year during Lent.
