US: Mango market steady with good volume

Mangos imported from Mexico are currently enjoying good prices despite strong volume. This has come as a result of good consumer demand.

“The market has been good with higher volumes and higher FOB values,” said Gary Clevenger of Freska Produce. Prices hovered around the $4.50 to $5.50 per box range on the strength of a spring marketing season which includes Easter, Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day. The combination of strong prices with good volumes is welcome, said Clevenger, especially considering how rare it is. He believes these signs point to growing consumer consumption.

“The biggest threat is always volume,” he said. “The market works on supply and demand, and when there is too much product on the market, prices will suffer.” He said keeping a steady, regulated supply works best to control price fluctuations, but complications arise because of the perishable nature of produce, so good prices combined with good volumes are rare.

Supplies currently come from Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacán, but Freska will switch production areas to Nayarit and Sinaloa during the middle of this month, said Clevenger. There should be no change in quality during the transition, he added, due to Freska's quality control standards.

“Quality does not waiver much with Freska,” he said, “as we have our own quality control team that oversees all of our packing operations, so we've enjoyed the same good quality from Mexico year to year.”
