NZ: Apple export facility investigated
A Hawke's Bay packhouse has, temporarily at least, lost the right to inspect its own fruit destined for export. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Police carried out a search of the premises recently and the ban is now pending the outcome of the resultant MAF investigation. It is alleged that the packhouse - Matipou Export Ltd, Hastings - provided deceptive export inspection data, according to MAF spokesman, Greg Keys.
Mr Keys said in order to have MAF approval status, the packhouse, which in this case deals with apples, must meet export certification system standards which included organisation requirements, phytosanitary inspection, export documentation and importing countries phytosanitary requirements.
"The suspension has occurred in this case because MAF identified non-compliances with the above standards," he said.
It meant all fruit processed by the packhouse would need to undergo phytosanitary inspection by an independent agency, before gaining MAF export phytosanitary certification.
