AU: Mango industry set to go global

The mango industry forum, held this week in Darwin, seems to be suggesting an enthusiastic endorsement of international trade development for the fruit.

At the forum around 80 Top End growers were briefed on the latest research projects and marketing strategies.

Australian Mango Industry Association chair Gavin Scurr says that the industry needs to build on its reputation of supplying good quality mangoes.

"People love Australian mangoes because of the taste and that gives us an advantage when you've got a product that people want.

"However, we are under a competitive environment with the world's most expensive mangoes.

"Even though our varieties taste the best, they are low yielding varieties compared to world standards and we also have the world's most expensive labour.

"Our opportunities for export markets are in those niche markets where people want a really good tasting product and price is less of an impact.

"It's certainly possible to have tens of thousands of tonnes of mangoes around the world in strategic markets where people appreciate the taste."
